A gasket can look right on the drawing and still leave a door difficult to close. It can also feel pleasantly soft on the bench and lose contact after months inside a warm enclosure. Choosing a PVC-NBR Foam Sheet means looking beyond color and nominal thickness to the way the finished part behaves under compression.
At Qingdao Xinyu Electronic Co., Ltd., our PVC-NBR range is available as sheets, rolls and custom-converted parts. For equipment manufacturers, that gives the material a practical route into enclosure seals, contact pads and shaped components. The useful starting point is the joint: its gap, movement, surface condition and exposure determine what the foam needs to do.

How PVC-NBR Foam Works in a Compressed Joint
PVC-NBR combines polyvinyl chloride with nitrile rubber. The formulation, cell structure and processing determine the finished foam's behavior; the polymer names alone do not establish a temperature limit, fire classification or fluid resistance. A closed-cell grade can resist passage through its cellular structure, but the complete gasket still has edges, joints and contact surfaces where leakage can occur.
Compression brings the foam into contact with an uneven mating surface. That contact needs to continue around the sealing path. Too little compression can leave a gap, while excessive compression can increase closing force or permanently distort the material. A thick pad is therefore not automatically a better seal.
For a PVC-NBR foam gasket, consider both the load needed to compress it and its recovery afterward. Compression force describes resistance while squeezed. Compression set describes the permanent deformation remaining after a specified compression and recovery procedure. These answer different questions, and neither should be replaced by an informal thumb-pressure test.
Compare Thickness Against the Actual Assembly Gap
The following calculation illustrates geometry only. It is not a recommended operating range for any Xinyu grade. Compression is calculated as the original thickness minus the closed gap, divided by the original thickness. The acceptable value must come from material data and an assembly trial.

Does the material recover after sustained closure?
A tolerance stack changes this picture. A nominal 3 mm gap may differ near hinges, fasteners and corners. Measure representative assemblies rather than calculating from a single drawing dimension. Include the effect of paint, adhesive thickness and any distortion introduced during fastening.
Do not stretch a narrow strip to make its ends meet. Stretching changes its dimensions and may cause it to pull away later. For a continuous perimeter, a properly designed die-cut shape can simplify positioning, although material use and handling must also be considered. Keep enough width around bolt holes to avoid a fragile sealing path.
Choose Sheet Roll or Die Cut Foam for the Production Line
PVC-NBR foam sheets suit trial cutting and layouts containing several shapes. Rolls can support repeated strip production or a converting process that already handles continuous material. Die cut foam parts are useful when an operator needs a defined outline, hole pattern or assembly orientation without measuring every piece.
Our converting options include cutting, die cutting and lamination. The right choice depends on what happens after the foam arrives. A buyer with an established cutting operation may prefer sheet stock; an assembly plant may gain more from a finished component with a clearly identified application side.
Before selecting a format, count the handling steps. Does someone separate each gasket, remove an inner waste piece, peel a liner and align it inside a recess? A low material price can hide considerable assembly work. Samples should be assessed at the workstation, with the gloves, tools and cycle sequence operators actually use.
Match Adhesive Backing to the Contact Surface
An adhesive-backed foam sheet has two jobs to perform. The foam must provide the required mechanical behavior, and the adhesive must hold it on the specified surface. Success on clean bare steel does not establish performance on textured powder coating, a low-energy plastic or a surface carrying release agent.
Where lamination is part of the project, identify the substrate and describe cleaning, application temperature and exposure after assembly. Ask whether the adhesive simply holds a seal in position until the cover closes, or whether it carries a sustained load. That distinction affects the evaluation.
Peel a sample after the agreed dwell period and inspect where separation occurs. Failure within the foam differs from adhesive release at the substrate. For removable covers, also check whether repeated opening drags the foam sideways. A seal that works during the first closure may be damaged by normal servicing.
A Marine Retrofit Shows Why Exposure Comes First
In a documented yacht retrofit, Titan Marine Air installed ArmaFlex Ultima on cooling-system components after insulation deterioration in an engine room. Armacell describes humidity, vibration and limited access as part of the application challenge. The case demonstrates why foam selection must account for the surroundings and installation details, not simply the appearance of an unused sample. Read Armacell's marine case study.
That project used a specified insulation system, not our gasket material. Its practical lesson for equipment seals is to reproduce the relevant exposure before accepting a component. A PVC-NBR sealing foam exposed to cleaning fluid, heat or movement needs its own evidence; another manufacturer's marine installation cannot establish those properties.
Cooling equipment also operates at significant scale. The International Energy Agency's 2018 cooling report estimated that air conditioners and electric fans accounted for about one-fifth of electricity used in buildings worldwide. That historical figure explains the attention paid to equipment performance; it does not quantify savings from a particular gasket. IEA cooling report.
Approve a Gasket Through Functional Testing
A useful sample review begins with dimensional checks, then moves to the complete assembly. Close the cover using the intended fasteners and inspect contact around the perimeter. Where leakage matters, use a defined test with stated conditions and acceptance criteria. Visual contact alone cannot prove a water-ingress rating.
Keep the evaluation focused on realistic failure modes:
· Check closing force and local deformation near hinges and screws.
· Examine recovery after the specified closed period and temperature exposure.
· Inspect adhesive lift, corner separation and damage after service opening.
· Record dimensions using a method that does not excessively compress the specimen.
If the component also reduces rattling, test it with the operating equipment. A foam pad can prevent direct contact between parts, but that is different from proving a specified sound reduction. Likewise, a cushioning function does not establish thermal-insulation performance. Give every required function a test of its own.
Retain an approved sample together with the drawing revision and material identification. When a later batch looks different, those references help distinguish a harmless appearance variation from a change affecting fit. An unlabeled piece in a desk drawer is a weak reference for a repeat order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PVC-NBR foam automatically suitable for oil exposure
No. Nitrile content is relevant, but resistance depends on the finished formulation, the fluid, temperature and duration. Evaluate the proposed grade with the actual exposure instead of treating every PVC-NBR blend as interchangeable.
Should I choose the softest available gasket
Only if it meets the assembly requirements. A very soft material may reduce closing force but behave differently under sustained compression. Compare contact, recovery and dimensional stability alongside the force needed to close the joint.
Can an adhesive layer replace mechanical compression
Usually these perform different functions. Adhesive may locate the foam while the assembled joint supplies sealing pressure. If the bond must also support a load, describe that load explicitly and evaluate the laminated construction for it.
What information is needed for a die cut sample
Send a dimensioned drawing, gap range, intended thickness, contact material and exposure conditions. Include hole locations, adhesive-side requirements and a description of how the part will be installed and serviced.
Request a PVC-NBR Foam Sheet Sample for Your Assembly
The best PVC-NBR Foam Sheet is the one that fits the joint and maintains the required contact through normal use. Send Xinyu your component drawing and operating conditions to discuss sheet stock, roll material or a custom-converted sample. A short assembly trial is a sensible way to settle thickness, shape and lamination before committing to production quantities.
